Timmins man charged following 'assaultive' incident with city police

Police say that the 31-year-old resisted officers and was in possession of a weapon

The Timmins Police Service has charged a local man with a number of Criminal Code offences stemming from an incident which occurred at the intersection of Middleton Street and Wilcox Avenue during the morning hours of Saturday, Dec. 7. A Timmins Police Service officer had occasion to stop a vehicle for a Highway Traffic Act violation.

During the discourse with the officer, the driver became aggressive and assaultive towards the officer. Additional officers attended the scene to render assistance.

A weapon was located in the vehicle and the driver was arrested by the Timmins Police Service after a physical confrontation came to an end. As a result of the incident, Brandt Vanderhyden, 31, of Timmins, has been charged with:

  • Resist peace officer contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • No currently validated licence plate contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
  • Fail to display two licence plates contrary to the Highway Traffic Act

The accused was released from police custody on the strength of a promise to appear compelling him to attend Provincial Court in Timmins on Jan. 7, 2020 to answer to the charges laid against him.
