Theft investigation leads to impaired charges and more

ENGLEHART - On July 3, 2021 shortly after 7 a.m., members from the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call for a theft on Fourth Avenue in the Town of Englehart.    

Further investigation revealed that the driver fled the scene in a vehicle, heading southbound on Highway 11. 

A short time after, officers located and stopped the vehicle in a parking lot off Highway 65 East. It was determined that the driver had consumed suspected controlled substances. 

The accused was arrested and transported to the Temiskaming Detachment to conduct further testing with a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). 

Jorden Chambers, a 29-year-old resident of Burlington has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand, contrary to section 320.15(1) of the CC
  • Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code, contrary to section 320.18(1)(a) of the CC,
  • Theft Under $5,000, contrary to section 334(b) of the CC
  • Possession break in instruments, contrary to section 351(1) of the CC
  • Fail to comply with probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC (two counts)
  • Driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
  • Permit use of plate not authorized for vehicle, contrary to section 12(1)(d) of the HTA
  • Operate a motor vehicle without insurance, contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act (CAIA) 

The accused was released by way of an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on August 10, 2021 in the City of Temiskaming Shores. 

The OPP reminds motorists that any amount of alcohol or drug can impair one's ability to drive. If you observe a suspected impaired driver, please call 911 or contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122 and report it.
