Suspicious person call leads to assaulting a police officer charge

Police say the accused damaged their vehicle after becoming assaultive

On Aug. 12, 2020, members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a suspicious person on Kirkland Street in the Town of Kirkland Lake.

Police located the subject of the complaint and while speaking with this person, they became assaultive and caused damage to a police vehicle.

As a result, Casey Swiergosz, age 25, from Kirkland Lake, was arrested and charged with the following; 

  • Assault a peace officer, contrary to section 270(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),  
  • Mischief under $5,000, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC,  
  • Uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the CC; and 
  • Causing a disturbance, contrary to section 175(1)(a) of the CC.

The accused was released on an Undertaking and is scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in Kirkland Lake, on Sept. 24, 2020.
