Shots fired during neighbourhood dispute in Englehart: OPP

ENGLEHART - On May 22, 2021 shortly after 5:00 p.m. members of the Temiskaming and Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a neighbour dispute on First Street in the Town of Englehart.

Further investigation revealed that a verbal altercation ensued between three parties. One of the accused fired shots with a weapon, while the other accused assaulted the victim. The two accused then continued to make threats toward the victim's pet.

No injuries were sustained as a result of the incident.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m. officers located and arrested both accused.

Clayton Astoforoff, a 58-year-old resident of Englehart, is charged with:

  • Assault with a weapon, contrary to section 267(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Uttering threats - damage or injure animal, contrary to section 264.1(1)(c) of the CC (two counts)
  • Assault, contrary to section 266 of the CC
  • Mischief under $5,000, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC

James Astoforoff, an 86-year-old resident of Englehart, is charged with:

  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC
  • Uttering threats - damage or injure animal, contrary to section 264.1(1)(c) of the CC

Both accused were released by way of an undertaking and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on June 29, 2021 in the City of Temiskaming Shores.
