Scooter driver charged with impaired

Accused was also not wearing a helmet, police say

HEARST On March 27, 2021, members of the James Bay Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol and observed a person riding an electric scooter on the sidewalk without a helmet. Further investigation revealed that the driver of the electric scooter was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages.

As a result of the investigation, the driver Claude Lafontaine, 49 years old from Hearst, was arrested and charged with the following:
    •    Adult operation while prohibited, contrary to section 320.18(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
    •    Adult operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the CC, and
    •    Adult operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC.

The accused was released by way of an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on April 28, 2021 in Hearst.
