The Timmins Police Service is issuing a Traffic Advisory in regards to motorists operating their vehicle with excessive tint levels on their windshields and front compartment windows.

Recently, the Traffic Section of the Timmins Police Service acquired a calibrated device designed to determine and measure tint levels on the side windows and windshields of vehicles.

Constable Gauthier states, “legal tint should be 30 or higher. Other drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists should be able to make eye contact with a driver for obvious safety reasons. The tint level depicted in the photo supplied is unacceptable and illegal."

The Timmins Police Service – Traffic Section has begun to ramp up enforcement in regards to this type of offence.

Vehicles that are altered or equipped with windows treated in such a way, as to be in violation with the regulations, pose an obvious officer safety issue and may also interfere with a driver’s ability to safely see outward as they drive.

In order to address a number of local persistent traffic issues, the Traffic Services officers will be undertaking a concentrated enforcement initiative focused on the following areas:

  • Illegal levels of window tint on windshields and front compartment windows
  • Improper mufflers
  • Use of devices designed to obscure/obstruct any licence plate

The applicable violations of particular interest to the Traffic Services officers are listed as follows:

Color coating obscuring the interior 73(3) of the Highway Traffic Act

  • No person shall drive a motor vehicle where surface of the windshield or any window to the direct left or right of the driver’s seat has been coated in such a manner as to substantially obscure the view to the interior.

Improper muffler 75(1) of the Highway Traffic Act

  • Every motor vehicle shall be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise.

Obstruct plate 13(2) of the Highway Traffic Act

  • Every plate shall be kept free from dirt and obstruction…view of the number plate shall not be obscured or obstructed.

All three offences can result in a minimum $110 fine.

The Timmins Police Service remains accountable to the public and devote resources in such a way as to contribute to roadway safety within our community.
