OPP recover body from Lake Temagami after tragic water tubing incident

'The individual on the tube was ejected into the water and could not be located'

A boating incident on Lake Temagami has ended in tragedy. 

The OPP have confirmed they recovered the body of 35-year-old Douglas Coppin of Severn Township on July 15. 

On July 14, 2021, shortly after 2:30 p.m. members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Temiskaming OPP Marine Unit, the Temiskaming OPP Crime Unit, the OPP Aviation Services-Helicopter Section, the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) Team, the First Nation Bear Island Police, and the Nipissing Emergency Medical Services (EMS), responded to a missing person on Lake Temagami.   

The OPP say their Investigation revealed that boating activities were underway when a water tube flipped. 

"The individual on the tube was ejected into the water and could not be located," the OPP stated in a release. 

The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) continued the search on July 15 who located the deceased man.

The OPP confirmed to BayToday that Coppin was not wearing a life jacket. 

The investigation is ongoing under the direction of the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS).

The OPP reminds all operators and passengers to carry an approved lifesaving device in your vessel or pleasure craft for each person on board. 

They suggest you find one that fits properly and wear it every time you go out on a vessel or pleasure craft.
