One arrested after woman assaulted during 'unprovoked incident'

The Timmins Police Service has investigated a disturbance that occurred yesterday evening (Oct. 19) at the intersection of Mountjoy Street South and Third Avenue where a 54-year-old woman was assaulted.

Based on investigation, it was determined that a male suspect, who is known to police, randomly struck a female pedestrian with a weapon in an unprovoked incident.

The suspect fled the scene on foot but was located by the Timmins Police shortly after the original incident took place.

When approached by the police, the suspect engaged in hostile and resistant behaviour but was eventually taken into police custody.

A quantity of a controlled substance was located on the suspect’s person as he was arrested. The victim declined medical treatment for an injury to her arm.

As a result, Charles Spence, 37, of Timmins has been charged with:
    •    assault with a weapon contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    assault with intent to resist arrest contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    possession of a controlled substance contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act
    •    fail to comply with probation order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada  

The accused remains in police custody for the purposes of a bail hearing slated for today at the Ontario Court of Justice in Timmins to answer to the charges laid against him.
