Man facing charges after victim assaulted with a weapon: police

He was located by the K9 unit after police received a tip about someone sleeping on a neighbouring property

CHAMBERLAIN TOWNSHIP - On May 16, 2021 shortly after 6:30 a.m. members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a disturbance at a residence on Chamberlain Road 2 in the Township of Chamberlain.

Further investigation revealed that a victim had been assaulted with a weapon. The accused then began striking things outside the residence and fled the scene on foot prior to police arrival.

The OPP Canine (K9) Unit attended the scene to assist with locating the accused.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m. officers received a call of an individual who was asleep on a neighbouring property. The accused was recognized by officers and arrested. The accused was transported to hospital by Temiskaming Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as a precautionary measure. 

Once in police custody, the accused immediately became belligerent and combative refusing to comply with officers. An altercation ensued, resulting in an officer being assaulted.

Mark Allen, a 52-year-old resident of Chamberlain Township, is charged with:

  • Assault causing bodily harm - choke, suffocate or strangle, contrary to section 267(c) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Assault with a weapon, contrary to section 267(a) of the CC
  • Uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the CC (two counts)
  • Mischief under $5,000, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC
  • Breach of conditional sentence, contrary to section 742.1 of the CC
  • Assault a peace officer, contrary to section 270(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)

The accused was held for a Bail Hearing and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date in the City of Temiskaming Shores.
