The Timmins Police Service has charged a local man with a number of Criminal Code offences stemming from an incident which occurred at the intersection of Cedar and Algonquin Boulevard yesterday evening.
The Timmins Police Service responded to an incident where a 30-year-old man was walking along Algonquin Blvd. at Cedar Street and began yelling at passersby in the immediate area.
He was approached by a pedestrian on the sidewalk and the suspect proceeded to slap a drink out of the pedestrian’s hand.
The suspect then approached a second pedestrian a short while later and proceeded to engage in an unprovoked attack on the 68-year-old male pedestrian by kicking him and pushing him to the ground.
The pedestrian sustained injury in the form of scrapes to his knees, a cut to the top of his head, to his elbow and above his right eye.
Responding Timmins Police Service officers arrived on scene and were alerted to the suspect’s location by motorists who had stopped to render assistance.
The suspect was placed under arrest only after continuing to yell out assorted profanities. A search of the suspect’s person incident to arrest yielded a Methamphetamine tablet.
The suspect was transported to the Timmins Police station where he engaged in further disruptive behaviour resulting in additional Criminal Code charges being laid against him.
The pedestrian was treated for his injuries at the scene by responding paramedics and received further treatment at Timmins and District Hospital.
As a result of the incident, Kirk Sutherland, 30, of Timmins, has been charged with:
- Cause disturbance contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
- Uttering threats contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
- Assault contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
- Possession of a controlled substance contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act
- Breach of recognizance contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
- Fail to comply with probation order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
The accused remains in police custody awaiting a bail hearing slated for this morning at Provincial Court in Timmins to address the charges laid against him.
