Man charged with mischief, theft after incidents at laundromat, variety store

The Timmins Police Service has charged a local man with a number of Criminal  Code offences stemming from a series of criminal incidents that occurred in Timmins late last month as well as early this month.  

On Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020, the Timmins Police responded to an incident of criminal mischief that occurred at a Wilson Avenue laundromat where the suspect had entered the business and damaged a number of vending machines located within. 

The suspect was captured on video surveillance equipment in the act of smashing a coin machine with a backpack that contained bricks. 

The suspect did manage to gain entry into a vending machine and fled with several chocolate bars.  

Significant damage resulted from these actions in regards to the coin machine, the vending machine and an ATM.  

The estimate of total damage in dollar figures is not yet known.  

The same subject was involved in an incident of shoplifting that occurred during the afternoon of  Wednesday, Nov. 4 at a Schumacher variety store.  

The suspect was captured on video surveillance stealing items with a value of $9.99. 

The suspect responsible for both criminal acts was positively identified and arrested on Nov. 18 by the Timmins Police Service  

As a result of the investigations into these incidents, Michael Williams, 33, of Timmins, has  been charged with:  

  • Mischief – Under $5000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada  
  • Theft Under $5000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

The accused has been released from police custody on the strength of an Undertaking requiring that he attend at Provincial Court in Timmins on December 23rd to answer to the charges laid against him.
