Man accused of attempting to take officer's firearm during arrest

The Timmins Police Service has charged a local man with a number of Criminal Code offences stemming from an incident which occurred at a First Avenue residence during the late afternoon hours of Thursday, July 15.

The Timmins Police Service responded to a disturbance in progress involving three persons at the residence.

Responding Timmins Police officers managed to separate the aggravated parties and escort a male subject out of the residence as he was no longer welcome.

Once outside, the male subject began yelling obscenities towards the occupants of the residence.

[It is alleged that] initial attempts to arrest the subject were met with active resistance and at one point in the physical altercation, the male subject attempted to remove an officer’s firearm from its holster.

The officers gained control of the subject and completed the arrest and took the man into custody.

As a result of the incident, William Parker, 50 of Timmins, has been charged with:
    •    Cause disturbance contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    Attempt to disarm a police officer contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    Resist peace officer contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

The accused remains in police custody awaiting a bail hearing slated for today at Provincial Court in Timmins to address the charges laid against him.
