Kirkland Lake traffic stop leads to drug, weapon charges

On Aug. 25, 2022, The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North East Region Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), conducted a traffic stop as part of an ongoing drug investigation in the Town of Kirkland Lake.

Police seized drug paraphernalia, drugs suspected to be opioids (fentanyl), crack cocaine, methamphetamine, and a prohibited weapon.

As a result of the investigation two people have been arrested and charged.

Ethan McWhirter, 24 years of age, of Kirkland Lake, has been charged with:

  • Possession of a prohibited device or ammunition, contrary to section 92(2) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - opioid, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - cocaine, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - methamphetamine, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA

Stephanie Wincikaby, 43 years of age, of Kirkland Lake, has been charged with possession of a prohibited device or ammunition, contrary to section 92(2) of the CC.

Both accused were remanded into custody and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Aug. 26, 2022.
