Driver stuck in ditch, and the person who pulled up to assist, both charged with impaired driving in Kapuskasing

KAPUSKASING - On April 6, 2021 members of the James Bay Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call of a possible impaired driver. Police approached a male that appeared to have minor injuries and his Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) was stuck in the ditch. While talking with the UTV driver, a person pulled up in a pick-up truck to assist.

Further investigation revealed that both persons were found to have consumed alcoholic beverages.

As a result, Jacques Carriere, 58 years old, and Dianne Carriere, 59 years old, both of Hearst, were arrested and charged with:

  • Adult operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to Section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC), and
  • Adult operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to Section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC).

Both accused were released by way of an undertaking and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on June 7, 2021 by video. Both accused were issued a 90 day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (ADLS) and both the UTV and pick-up truck were impounded for seven days.
