Driver accused of having cannabis in the vehicle, racing near Englehart

Police say the driver was going over 140 km/h in a 90 zone

EVANTUREL TWP – On Sept. 14, 2020, shortly before 5:30 p.m., members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting stationary radar patrol on Hwy 11 in Evanturel Township, just south of the Town of Englehart.

A northbound vehicle approached the officers' location, travelling in excess of 140 km/h in a posted 90km/h zone. 

Officers stopped the vehicle and upon speaking with the driver, it was revealed that the driver was breaching a prior release condition.

The driver, Javell Jackson, a 26-year-old resident of Toronto, has been arrested and charged with:  

  • Failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court, contrary to section 145(5)(a), of the Criminal Code (CC),  
  • Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available, contrary to section 12(11) of the Cannabis Control Act 2017 (CCA2017),  
  • Race a motor vehicle - stunt, contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA), and 
  • Driver fail to surrender licence, contrary to section 33(1) of the HTA.

The accused was held for a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date in the City of Temiskaming Shores.

The vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded for seven days.
