Charges laid after single-vehicle crash on Highway 11

Police say the driver had cannabis in the vehicle and was driving without a license

On Jan. 12, 2021, members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 11, in Marquis Township.

The investigation revealed that the driver was breaching a release order, did not have a valid driver's licence and drugs suspected to be cannabis was seized.

As a result, Nelson Lasu, age 20, from Scarborough, Ontario, has been charged with the following;

  • Failure to comply with release order, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Have care or control of vehicle with cannabis readily available, contrary to section 12(1) of the Cannabis Control Act 2017,
  • Careless driving, contrary to section 130(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA), and
  • Driver motor vehicle - No licence, contrary to section 32(1) of the HTA. 

The accused was released on an Appearance Notice and is scheduled to appear for the Ontario Court of Justice in Kirkland Lake on March 4, 2021.
