Cab driver robbed by woman armed with fork: Timmins Police

The Timmins Police Service has charged a local person with theft related offences stemming from an incident that occurred yesterday evening in the vicinity of Balsam Street South and First Avenue in Timmins.

Timmins Police Service officers responded to a call for service regarding a theft in progress where [it is alleged that] a woman had stolen money from a taxi and was fleeing with an undetermined amount of cash.

Responding Timmins Police Service officers located the female suspect a short distance from the original scene.

The suspect was brandishing a kitchen fork and not compliant with directions given to her by the police to discard the potential weapon.

The suspect was eventually subdued and taken into custody.

As a result of the incident, Juanita Chakasim, 27, of Timmins, has been charged with:
    •    Theft under $5,000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    Assault contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    Possession of property obtained by crime contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    Fail to comply with probation order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Chakasim remains in police custody awaiting a bail hearing slated for this morning at Provincial Court in Timmins to answer to the charges laid against her.
