An anti-racism rally this afternoon could affect traffic through the downtown core, warn police.

A second Black Lives Matter protest is scheduled for today (June 5) at noon. It starts at Participark and participants will walk along Algonquin Boulevard to Timmins City Hall, where there will be speeches.

Ahead of the demonstration, police have issued an advisory that traffic flows may be affected.

"The Timmins Police is collaborating with the organizers so that the safety of the attendees is enhanced and so that traffic in the affected area is fully aware," reads the notice.

"Depending on the number of persons marching in this demonstration, the Timmins Police Service may find it necessary to limit, restrict, or halt traffic in the immediate area surrounding city hall for public safety reasons between the hours of noon and 2 p.m."

To avoid delays, drivers should consider alternate routes.

"The Timmins Police Service respects any group's right to gather for the purposes of peaceful demonstration to draw public attention to any legitimate cause," according to the advisory.

Yesterday, PHU medical officer of health Dr. Lianne Catton offered some ways for people to reduce potential exposure to COVID-19 at the events.

She said people should be physically distancing from people they don't live with, and wear a non-medical mask.
