It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Walter Alexander Blahey on January 11, 2021 at the age of 93.

Walter was predeceased by his loving wife Betty (nee Melenchuk) in 2002 and his parents Nicholas and Anne Blahey (nee Krupka), and brothers, William (Timmins), Edward (Elliot Lake) and Raymond (North Bay). Walter leaves behind his four children and their families: David (Janice, deceased 2020), and his children Christopher (Kristen) of Cold Lake Alberta, and Kimberly (Jeff) and son Finley of Bonfield; daughter Lou Ann (Steven) and their children Gregory (Julianny) of Toronto, Patricia (Andrea) and their daughter Ryan of Piano di Mommio, Italy, and Scott of Vancouver; son Tim (Laurie) of Ottawa and their son Connor, of Halifax; and daughter Linda Hegyi and sons Jim and Jack of North Bay. Walter also leaves behind his dear sisters-in-law Eveline and Mildred (Mississauga) and Germaine (North Bay).

Walter was born in Timmins in 1927, and along with his brothers, was instrumental in carrying on the family grocery business. Through their hard work, they had businesses in Sault Ste. Marie, Timmins, and were pioneers in the development of Elliot Lake. Walter eventually settled in North Bay with his family where he operated several successful grocery stores. Good times were shared with family in the summertime at their home on Lake Nipissing, and for 25 years they wintered in Florida with many close North Bay friends.

The family would like to thank the staff of Eastholme in Powassan for their wonderful care and support over the past year.

Due to COVID restrictions, the family will hold a private funeral service. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Pro-Cathedral of the Assumption Parish (procathederal.ca) will be gratefully acknowledged as expressions of sympathy.
