Canada's Shapovalov wins first-round match at ATP 500 tournament

BASEL, Switzerland — Canadian tennis star Denis Shapovalov advanced to the second round of the Swiss Indoor's ATP 500 tournament on Monday with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3) win over Yuichi Sugita of Japan.

Shapovalov, of Richmond Hill, Ont., fired in 13 aces during the two hour two minute match.

The 18-year-old won 76 per cent of his first-service points and converted on 3-of-5 break points.

Shapovalov skyrocketed up the ATP rankings to No. 49 with a remarkable summer that included a third-round win over world No. 1 Rafael Nadal at the Rogers Cup and a second-round win over eighth-seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the U.S. Open.

Sugita is ranked 38th.
