You Know Who The Red Cross Is, But Do You Know What We Do ?

March is Red Cross Month and the organization is encouraging residents to get to know their local Red Cross. From emergencies to community support services, the Red Cross wants to ensure those in need of assistance or those interested in volunteering know what is available through the Red Cross right in this community.

“The Canadian Red Cross is here when you need us most, and this March we are making every effort to help people get to know us and get involved,” said KayLee Morissette, community services coordinator.

Throughout the Timmins District, the Red Cross delivers a variety of programs, including Disaster Management, Meals on Wheels, Student Nutrition and Injury Prevention programs.

“People often think of the Red Cross as assisting internationally, particularly during times of disaster. What they may not know is that the Red Cross is very active, each and every day, right here in our community,” said Ms. Morissette.

For more than 100 years, the Canadian Red Cross has provided help and hope to those facing conflict, disaster, injury or illness, both in Canada and around the world. Every four minutes, the Canadian Red Cross responds to a disaster in Canada providing support and comfort to those affected. The Red Cross also offers a variety of services that help elderly and vulnerable members of the community remain living in their own homes, including Meals on Wheels, Transportation and a Health Equipment Loan Program. First aid, water safety, violence and abuse prevention programs and workshops on humanitarian issues are also offered by the Red Cross. In Timmins, Red Cross offers an Assisted Living program to meet the needs of the community.

Residents can help support the Red Cross by making a financial donation or by becoming a volunteer. Until March 16th, they can also support the Red Cross while having a chance to win a 2014 Nissan Murano, Polaris Sportsman ATV or cash prizes.  To learn more, please visit www.redcross.ca or call the local branch at 705 267 4900.
