A group of women are rehearsing to bring The Vagina Monologues to local stages next week.

The popular episodic play is being staged Feb. 27 to March 1 in Timmins at three different venues. Feb. 27 it's at Full Beard Brewing, Feb. 28 the show is at Northern College's Quill Lounge, and March 1 it's at the Working Class. All performances start at 7 p.m.

While the title may be intimidating, organizer Michelle Goulet says the shows are open to men and women of all ages — although, because of the venues it is an age of majority event.

"It’s really about female empowerment and really creating awareness and education about violence against women and what form that takes, because it takes a lot of different forms. Every woman can either relate to at least one of the monologues or know somebody else who can, so it’s very relevant and it’s something that I think people will be very moved afterwards,” she said.

For people who haven't seen the monologues, Goulet explained that the production stems from interviews done with women 20 years ago.

"It’s done every year in February, and there were interviews with women from all over the world and those interviews were transcribed into monologues," she said. "There’s a lot of really interesting varieties of stories that you’ll be able to hear from different women’s perspectives."

This year's cast features 16 women with varying levels of experience on stage. The show runs for about 90 minutes, and the proceeds are for the Timmins and Area Women in Crisis and One Billion Rising campaign.

Tickets are a minimum donation of $10 and available at Full Beard and Altered Reality.

Being the first year the show is staged, Goulet said being able to raise $1,000 to $1,500 would be a great start.

"Every dollar that comes in that they’re able to access goes to help a woman and her family escape a really violent situation. All of these different scenarios that we don’t even think of like child care or pet care or clothing, sometimes women are leaving in the middle of the night without anything,” she said.
