Working with northerners a priority for Elliott

Ontario PC leadership candidate stops in Timmins, Cochrane

At a stop in Timmins today, Ontario PC leadership hopeful Christine Elliott said she wants to work in partnership with people in Northern Ontario.

Elliott made two stops in the north today, starting with a breakfast meet-and-greet in Cochrane. At noon she was at the Senator Hotel in Timmins to meet with local riding association members and the public.

When it comes to the north, she agrees with criticism that the provincial government isn’t moving quickly enough on the Ring of Fire.

“This is a huge resource, it has huge potential for Northern Ontario, all of Ontario, to create jobs, to create wealth and the fact that the Wynne government hasn’t moved on it I think is a tragedy. We really need to get moving, we need to get things sorted out, we need to build the transportation links and we need to get things started,” Elliott said.

Today’s trip isn’t Elliott’s first trip to Northern Ontario.

She hopes to visit more during the leadership race and into the future.

“I know that a lot of solutions get made for the north by people at Queen’s Park who don’t really know what they’re talking about,” she said.

“We need to involve northerners in the discussion to tell us what you need and how it can be done and we want to work in partnership with everyone in the north. It’s a priority for me, something I would want to continue.”

Elliott is one of three people vying for the top job in the party after Patrick Brown resigned last month.

Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli is the interim leader for the party, which will hold a leadership convention March 10. There is a provincial election coming up in June.

Key dates for the leadership race have been revealed.

There is a leadership debate Feb. 15, Feb. 16 is the membership cut-off, verification numbers will be mailed to PC members around Feb. 20, the voting period is March 2 - 8, with the convention March 10. More details on the leadership race are available here.
