A past favourite is making a comeback at Community Living Timmins.

A $45,765 donation from Newmont Goldcorp has allowed the organization to build a 12x20 garage at the Vic Mahoney Centre.

“The new garage will provide a much-needed opportunity to expand on our current supports and programming and allow for delivery of new community-based programs. Another wonderful outcome of this project will be bringing back the woodworking program,” said Community Living Timmins executive director Johanne Rondeau at the celebration of the new building.

Manager of community services and development Amanda Wessman said it's been about 15 years since the woodworking program has been offered.

As the agency expanded, she said the area that was used for a shop was turned into another program.

We hung onto all of the tools and everything, so they’re all being moved in,” she said.

Last year, the gardening program made a comeback.

Having a space to use as a greenhouse will allow that program to expand.

"They can start their gardening program months earlier and use the inside as a greenhouse,” she said.

The garage is insulated and heated and features a back section to store landscaping tools and equipment, which will boost the maintenance program.

Wessman explained there is a separate air exchange in the back, so the front has clean air for the programming.

She said the feedback for the new building and what it will mean has been awesome.

“Everybody’s really happy about it, they’re getting anxious to get more programs started,” she said. “All of this stuff’s been in storage for years, so us pulling it out, everybody’s super happy about that.”
