Woman dies when vehicle breaks through ice

(COCHRANE, ON) – Shortly before 7:00 p.m. on November 30, 2015, officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Cochrane Detachment responded to the report of a single passenger vehicle that had broken through the ice on the North East portion of Lake Commando in Cochrane, Ontario. 

OPP officers, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Cochrane Fire Department attended the scene and remove the lone 75-year-old female driver from Cochrane from the partly submerged vehicle.

She was subsequently transported to the local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

A Coroner’s investigation is ongoing in order to determine the series of events that took place prior to the vehicle submersion and the cause of death.

A post mortem is scheduled for Thursday, November 3, 2015 in Sudbury.

No foul play is suspected.

The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) is at the scene to assist with the removal of the vehicle from the frozen lake.
