Wind chill near -40 expected tonight

Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for Timmins and surrounding area.

When temperatures drop, people in need of emergency shelter can go to Living Space, 316 Spruce St. S., Timmins. If you know someone in need of shelter, contact 705-531-7233.

Extreme cold warning in effect for:
    •    Little Abitibi - Kesagami Lake
    •    Timmins - Cochrane - Iroquois Falls
    •    Kirkland Lake - Englehart
    •    Chapleau - Missinaibi Lake
    •    Gogama - Foleyet
    •    Fraserdale - Pledger Lake
    •    Kapuskasing - Hearst - Smooth Rock Falls

A period of very cold wind chills is expected.

Hazard:
Wind chill values near minus 40.

When:
Tonight into Friday morning.

Impacts:
Extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant.

Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

If it's too cold for you to stay outside, it's too cold for your pet to stay outside.
