Weapons and assault charges laid following grocery store theft

When confronted by staff, the accused allegedly brandished a weapon

On Feb. 20, 2018, officers on general patrol responded to a report of a theft at a local grocery store. Information received by police indicated that a male suspect had allegedly taken a quantity of food items and left without paying for the items. A short time later, when confronted by staff, the accused allegedly brandished a weapon. The suspect fled on foot and was located by police following a search of the area.

As a result of the incident, Michael Patrick LaPorte, 26, of Timmins faces charges of:

  • Theft under $5,000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm
  • Assault with a weapon x3
  • Breach of probation

The accused appeared in bail court on Feb. 21, where he was released on an Undertaking with a future court date of March 20, 2018.
