The City of Timmins has announced that grant applications are now being formally accepted for local businesses to improve their facilities.

Aiming to 'stimulate improvements and new growth' in designated sections of Downtown Timmins, South Porcupine, and Schumacher. a total of $50,000 has been approved by city council towards the grants.

Completed and eligible applications will be reviewed and approved for funding on a 'first come, first serve' basis', so interested parties should make it a priority as soon as possible. However, applications will only be accepted after 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

Required with the application are two quotes for the work to be done, as well as a building permit. Additionally, no bylaw or fire prevention deficiencies on the property must exist, and the property's water and tax bills must be paid up to date in order to be considered.

A maximum of $15,000 is available for a property under various programs such as:

  • Facade Improvements - to enhance the outer appearance of a building, including signage
  • Energy Efficiency - window and door improvements, insulation, heating, air conditioning, and ventilation improvements, as well as lighting
  • Building Code Upgrades - to improve accessibility, develop upper-storey residential spaces, and improve health and safety
  • Feasibility Study grants - up to $5,000 for design, engineering, or business plans
