ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE

************************
(South Porcupine) A number of traffic complaints have been received at the South Porcupine OPP detachment concerning unsafe passing.

This issue centers on east bound vehicles approaching the entrance to the Kidd Creek Met Site on Hwy 101 in Hoyle Twp.

This location is a high volume area for large commercial motor vehicles and commuting employees as well, especially at early morning hours when visibility is not ideal.

On a number of occasions, drivers have had to take evasive action to avoid collisions with east bound drivers who insist on passing despite a clearly marked double line and newly erected "No Passing" signage.

Increased patrols by the OPP are underway in this area to address this safety issue.

Motorists found disobeying this sign by overtaking traffic (passing) while east bound and approaching the entrance to the Met Site will be charged under the Highway Traffic Act.

Monetary fines, demerit points and potentially, court appearances are on the immediate horizon for motorists who fail to drive responsibly.

South Porcupine OPP Const. Marc Depatie adds "Collisions result when drivers fail to heed their responsibilities. The OPP take the burden of enhancing highway safety very seriously but it is a shared burden, shouldered equally by the motoring public and law enforcement personnel.  Motorists  can rightfully expect appropriate law enforcement action to be implemented when violations are detected in this area."
