(UPDATED) Two arrested in Sixth Avenue containment (5 photos)

Police believe at least one gunshot was fired

Two men have been arrested after an incident that started when a gun was fired late last night in Timmins, according to police.

Around 11 p.m. Jan. 4, Timmins Police were called to a disturbance in a basement apartment at a Sixth Avenue multi-unit residence, according to corporate communications coordinator Marc Depatie.

He said it escalated and a gun was fired. Two men barricaded themselves in the apartment when police arrived

“There is no indication that anybody was subject to a gunshot wound, but it’s our belief that at least one round was fired by an unknown type of firearm,” he said.

He said it appears the bullet went into a neighbouring residence and that forensics would determine that.

Residences in the area were evacuated and people in the houses beyond that perimeter were advised to stay inside, said Depatie.

Timmins Police, the OPP Tactics and Response Unit, OPP canine unit, and EMS were at the scene this morning. Timmins Police's critical incident negotiators were also used.

A block of Sixth Avenue between Cedar Street and Pine was blocked for the containment situation, which ended just after 10 a.m. today (Jan. 5) when two men were arrested.

Their names and charges won't be made public until the criminal charges are sworn in court.

Police are "seeking a search warrant to locate and secure any evidence."

It is believed the incident is isolated.

“The actual origin of the event stems from a disturbance that escalated to a point where a firearm was discharged, so obviously very serious criminal element that is attached. The overall safety of the neighbourhood of course is a chronic concern to the Timmins Police Service. We deploy our officers on patrols so that the alleged criminal activity that is taking place anywhere within the City of Timmins is scrutinized by our officers and where enforcement responses can be deployed they are in a timely fashion,” he said.

The barricaded areas were reopened to traffic just before 11 a.m. on Jan 5.
