Trapping pigeons? You better have a small game license

Police also remind citizens that individuals are responsible for disposing of the pigeon carcass

KIRKLAND LAKE - The Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is aware that the Town of Kirkland Lake will be renting out traps to residents to capture pigeons and that the individual will be responsible for the disposal of them. 

The OPP want to inform the residents that it is each individual's responsibility to educate themselves on this topic and to ensure that they are acting within the laws, regulations and town by-laws.  

Here are a few tips to ensure that you acting legally:  

  • You are required to possess a small game licence in order to trap and kill pigeons
  • Discharging a firearm is prohibited within the Town of Kirkland Lake
  • Disposal (killing) of the birds must be done in an ethical manner, think of how you would dispose of a partridge or a chicken
  • Discarding of the carcass - you cannot place it in the garbage for curb side pickup as per local by-laws, however you can bring it to the municipal dump

The OPP is committed to public safety and is encouraging everyone who intends on trapping and disposing of pigeons to use caution.
