The traffic services section of the Timmins Police Service is reminding drivers about the approaching deadline for the removal of studded tires.

The exemption for Northern Ontario residents (including Cochrane District) to allow the use of “studded tires” extends from October 1st to April 30th each year.

Any tires embedded with devices that project beyond the tread and have a hardness of greater than seven on the Mohs scale must be removed from vehicles before May 1, 2014.

Studded tires not removed before May 1, 2014 are very damaging to roadways. Drivers who fail to remove studded tires before the above date could face fines of $110 (including victim fine surcharge).
