Terry Fox's vision is being kept alive in Timmins once again this year.

The 39th annual Terry Fox Run is taking place Sept. 15 at Gillies Lake. Registration is at 11 a.m., there's a run at noon, and the walk is at 1 p.m.

“We try to offer everyone a run because we have lots of runners in town so we like to offer that event still,” said organizer Cathy Davis.

Individuals and teams are encouraged to participate.

“It’s for a common denominator, it’s for the research. And we all have been touched directly or indirectly by the disease of cancer,” said Davis. “It’s just to be all together and to keep Terry’s vision alive.”

While they've received some registrations so far, Davis said it could be better.

“Unfortunately Timmins is like a last-minute club,” she said. “For both events and volunteers we average about 200 people. So hopefully we’re looking for that again. Of course, our numbers are down compared to 20, 30 years ago, but we still offer the event just to keep up the momentum of keeping the Marathon of Hope alive here in Timmins."

Last year, the Timmins event achieved a milestone.

Davis said they are proud to have surpassed the $500,000 mark for fundraising.

“Everything counts, we have a small community, we have a lot of good organizations that are fundraising for a lot of good events so we have to just take the little piece of pie that we get,” she said.
