Provincial cash is boosting an ongoing City of Timmins project.

The city is getting $905,873 from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF). The funding is to help municipalities build and repair critical infrastructure —including roads, bridges, water and wastewater infrastructure.

Director of finance Natalie Moore said this year's funding is being used for the water pipe relining project, which is what the money has been allocated to for the past two years.

The city's 2021 allocation matches what it received last year. In 2015 and 2016, Timmins received $195,434, with the total increasing in the following years. In 2019, Timmins' portion was $869,307.

Across Ontario in 2021, about $200 million has been allocated to 424 small, rural and northern communities through OCIF.

"COVID-19 has created challenges for everyone, including our municipal partners," said Laurie Scott, Minister of Infrastructure, in a news release. "By making this stable, predictable investment, our government is not only improving critical infrastructure, we are strengthening local economies, creating jobs and laying the foundation for our long-term recovery."
