Timmins population drops in 2021 census

The population numbers are out for the 2021 census. 

In Timmins, there has been a 1.5 per cent drop in population compared to the 2016 census. The 2021 population 41,145 people, compared to 41,788 in 2016.

The number of private dwellings is 19,390, up from 19,317 in 2016. The number of those occupied by people permanently living in it is 17,886, up from 17,740 in 2016.

The population density is 13.9 people per square kilometre whereas it was 14 people per square kilometre in 2016. The city is 2,955.33 square kilometres.

For the federal riding district of Timmins-James Bay, the total population is down three per cent from 83,257 in 2016 to 80,785 people in 2021.

The 2021 Census data is being released in waves from now until November, beginning with population and dwelling characteristics.

"The Census of Population provides a snapshot of the population at a specific moment in time (May 11, 2021, for this census) and its consistent methodology allows for robust historical comparisons with data from previous censuses," according to Statistics Canada.

Canada's population has risen 5.2 per cent since the 2016 Census, to 36,991,981 from 35,151,728.

The 2021 Census counted 16,284,235 private dwellings in Canada, with 17.8 per cent of the population residing in  rural areas and 82.2 per cent in "population centres." The national population density is 4.2 people per square kilometre.

Statistics Canada notes data collection took place during the COVID-19 pandemic and the overall response rate was 98 per cent, slightly lower than the response rate for the 2016 census.
