With the onset of winter conditions across the region, the Timmins Police Service is reminding drivers to pay extra attention when driving.

Before heading out in a vehicle, always check weather and road conditions, and plan plenty of extra time to arrive at your destination. Below are some additional tips to ensure safe driving in winter conditions:

• Consider using winter tires and remember that it takes all vehicles longer to stop on snow-covered roads. • Watch out for frost and areas of the road that appear shiny. • Leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle ahead of you. • Remain a safe distance from snowplows and never attempt to pass snow removal vehicles. • Keep a winter driving survival kit in your vehicle which could include items such as an ice scraper or shovel, road flares, a first aid kit and non-perishable energy food. • Whenever visibility is poor, turn on your vehicle’s full lighting system.

Residents are also reminded that in an emergency, seconds count. If you see an emergency vehicle approaching, pull safely to the side of the road and wait for the vehicle to pass before proceeding.
