Timmins Police is Seeking Information About a Suspicious Hunt Camp Fire

The Timmins Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance regarding a suspicious fire that occurred at a hunting/trapping camp.

The Timmins Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance regarding a suspicious fire that occurred at a hunting/trapping camp. The camp is located 18 km north of Sandy Falls Road on the Mattagami River, bordering Jamieson and MacDiarmid townships. During the winter months, the camp can be accessed by snowmobile only.

Police received reports of the arson from the camp’s owner, who attended on January 26, 2014 to find the structure completely burned. It was established that between January 1, and January 26, 2014, unknown persons attended the camp and caused the fire.

The damage to the camp and contents, along with a storage shed also destroyed by the fire is estimated at approximately $75,000. More important than the monetary damage caused, the hunt camp had immeasurable sentimental value to the family, as it had been built almost 60 years ago and was used as a family gathering place during both the summer and winter months.

Residents having any information about this incident are being asked to call the Timmins Police Service at 705-264-1201. Those wishing to remain anonymous are asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 705-268-8477.
