‘Relayers’ to raise $155,000 for Canadian Cancer Society

TIMMINS, ON – Volunteers, team captains, survivors, caregivers and the Event Sponsor will gather at O’Gorman High School on Tuesday, February 12, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. for the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life kick-off event and information session.

The Canadian Cancer Society will officially announce the $155,000 fundraising goal for this year’s event to be held at O’Gorman High School on June 6, 2014.

The Canadian Cancer Society has been in the fight for life for more than 75 years. We have been relentless in our commitment to prevent cancer, fund research and support Canadians touched by cancer. From this foundation, we will work with Canadians to change cancer forever so fewer Canadians are diagnosed with the disease and more survive. Let’s begin Relay For Life 2014 in Timmins by hosting team fundraisers, encouraging online donations and recruiting new teams. With your support, the Society will continue to fund lifesaving research and provide essential information and support for people facing a cancer journey.

The theme for this year’s Relay For Life, will be announced – Relay For Life Beach Party – a beach party theme to warm folks up after a very cold winter. There will be entertainment, costumes, music, games, food and, of course, the ceremonies. The beach theme suggests fun, celebration, relaxation and good times. We know that the cancer journey is a very stressful time for everyone involved and we want to bring survivors, families, volunteers and participants together in celebration of the progress we have made and the promising future discoveries in the fight against cancer. We will, of course, honor survivors and caregivers in the Victory lap; remember loved ones in the luminary ceremony and express our commitment to the cause in the Fight Back ceremony.

This theme will appeal to people of all ages and will help keep participants engaged for the whole night through various activities, contests and demonstrations. Teams and survivors can apply the theme in many ways, from surfers, Hawaiian décor, beachwear, fish theme, boat theme and more. Their creativity will shine through and make for a very interesting Relay For Life. “We are so excited to announce that Goldcorp is once again on board as the event sponsor for the 2014 Relay For Life and we are truly grateful for the ongoing support of all our sponsors – NorthernTel, CTV and Rogers Radio,” states Sandra Coupal, Fundraising Coordinator of the Timmins Community Office of the Canadian Cancer Society. “We would also like to acknowledge O’Gorman High School staff and students who are once again providing the venue and many hours of their time to help make this event as wonderful as it is.”
