Timmins 1 fire grows to 2,000 hectares

The Timmins 1 forest fire has grown to 2,000 hectares, according to Aviation, Forest Fires and Emergency Services (AFFES).

Located two kilometres southeast of Morin Village and half a kilometre north of Barager's Lake, the fire was confirmed the afternoon of May 10. 

It is not under control and increased in intensity on Friday afternoon.

Highway 560 has been closed again between Highway 144 and Elk Lake. OPP say Westree residents can access their homes, but all other traffic is being denied access. Police are also asking people to not drive over water lines because it causes damage.

Yesterday, bucketing helicopters were working in the area.

May 13, four new fires were confirmed in the northeast. 

Kirkland Lake 2 is about two kilometres west of Twitchgrass Lake and is 15 hectares. Crews are battling it from the air. It's not under control.

Chapleau 3 is about 15 kilometres south of Biscotasi Lake and seven hectares. Two fire crews are committed to the fire that's not under control.

Sudbury 11 is about three kilometres south of Mozhabong Lake and is 100 hectares. Crews were battling it from the air and it's not under control. 

Algonquin Park 1 is west of Joe Lake and east of Rainbow Lake and is 11.5 hectares.

Along with Timmins 1, other active fires of note according to AFFES are:

  • Sudbury 4 started May 10 and is three kilometres east of Estaire and one kilometre south of Nepewassi Lake road. It's 212 hectares. Waterbombers, Twin Otters and belly-tanking helicopters were on the scene Tuesday and Wednesday. Seven FireRanger crews continue to work to suppress this fire which is not yet under control.
  • Sudbury 7 is 600 metres north of Ashigami road and 0.3 kilometres west of Ashigami Lake Road East. It's 221 hectares. Waterbombers, Twin Otters and belly-tanking helicopters were on the scene Tuesday and Wednesday. Seven FireRanger crews continue to work to suppress this fire which is not yet under control.
  • Timmins 2 is near Duchabani Creek, 1.5 kilometres northwest of Cullen Lake. It started May 10 and is not under control. It was last measured at 57.5 hectares.
  • Chapleau 2 is a 60-hectare fire that's 2.5 kilometres south of Highway 101 and six kilometres west of Foleyet. It's being held.
