The Timmins and District Hospital Welcomes Eight Third Year Medical Students

Eight medical students of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) are being welcomed in Timmins this week as part of the School’s Comprehensive Community Clerkship (CCC) Program.

Eight medical students of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) are being welcomed in Timmins this week as part of the School’s Comprehensive Community Clerkship (CCC) Program.

In 2006, a partnership was developed between NOSM and the Timmins and District Hospital resulting in TADH becoming a teaching site.  The patients, physicians and staff play a vital role in educating future doctors and health-care providers to be competent and caring physicians.

This is the seventh group of third year medical students to spend eight months in Timmins and at the Timmins and District Hospital since the first group in 2007.

During this time, the students are based in primary care clinics around the City and work within the clinics as well as in the hospital and community.  They also participate in rotations with various specialists as well as gain exposure to allied health professions.   It gives the students the opportunity to learn and participate in care of patients in a distinctively Northern environment.

“We are delighted to be able to continue our strong affiliation with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM),” said Roger Walker, President and CEO of Timmins and District Hospital.  “We are pleased to report that since our relationship with NOSM began, we have successfully recruited new family physicians each year who have chosen Timmins as a permanent place to work and live.”

In preparation for the students’ arrival, community members and hospital staff who make up the Timmins Local NOSM Group have been busy planning activities that assist the students by providing a smooth integration into Timmins during orientation week as well as throughout the year.
