TIMMINS—Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus is encouraging teachers to learn more about the democratic system in Canada by applying for the next Teachers Institute on Canadian Parliamentary Democracy. The 18th annual event will be held November 2nd to 7th in Ottawa.
Angus says the Teachers Institute has established a reputation amongst educators and parliamentarians as an excellent professional development opportunity.
“This program offers teachers an in-depth view of Parliament and its proceedings. This would be especially valuable to teachers of civics classes.”
Angus often speaks to students about Parliament and the importance of getting engaged democratically.
“I love going into the schools and talking with students of all ages about why we have the system we have and the need for young people to become democratically involved. This program helps teachers understand the inner working of Parliament. It is also a great opportunity to network with educators from across Canada."
The Teachers Institute, launched in 1996, is coordinated by the Library of Parliament and supported by the Speakers of both the Senate and the House of Commons. It is a unique professional development opportunity for teachers of governance and citizenship education. Each November, the program brings together approximately 70 educators from across the country, for an intensive, informative, unforgettable week on Parliament Hill.
