Along with their police partners, Victim Services agencies across the country will be acknowledging National Victims of Crime Awareness week from April 6 – 12, 2014. It is hoped that this week will raise awareness about issues facing victims of crime, and the programs, services and laws in place to help these victims and their families. The theme this year is “Taking Action.”

Timmins and District Victim Services is proud to commemorate the National Victims of Crime Awareness Week. This week, Timmins Police Service and OPP cruisers in the area will brand their cruisers with bumper stickers displaying the toll-free victim support line for the area.

“The National Victims of Crime Awareness week is an important event for our community because it offers us the opportunity to educate people on the service available to victims of crime and tragic circumstance,” said Emilene Dumoulin, Executive Director of Timmins and District Victim Services.

Timmins Police Chief John Gauthier added that having this information visible to the public is very important.

“We fully support this initiative, because we understand the importance of the service to the victims our officers see on an almost daily basis. Having the number at their fingertips is crucial to get these victims the support and resources they need.”

The initiative is being funded by the Victims Fund, a grant and contributions program administered by the Department of Justice Canada. Funds are available to provinces, territories, and non-governmental organizations for programs and services that give victims of crime a more effective voice in the criminal justice system.
