Falls are the most common cause of injury related hospitalizations among people 65 and older; however, they are not a normal part of aging, and can be predicted and prevented.

“The Porcupine Health Unit is pleased to join forces with our four partner health units to endorse Stay On Your Feet as our regional fall prevention strategy, as we consider it an approach that will best serve aging fellow Northerners, their families and communities, today and into the future,” says Joëlle Aubin, Manager of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention at the Porcupine Health Unit.

Stay On Your Feet is a fall prevention program for anyone age 65 and older that promotes 9 simple steps that any older adult can take to prevent falling.

There are a number of services and resources available as part of Stay On Your Feet including: exercise classes, education, home hazard assessments, fall-risk assessments, and medicine cleanout bags.

All older adults are encouraged to call the Porcupine Health Unit to get more information on Stay On Your Feet, and learn how to stay active, stay independent, and stay on your feet.

“We have had a lot of interest in Stay On Your Feet from both older adults in the community wanting to know how they can prevent falls, as well as from organizations wanting to partner with this program,” says Andrew Keck, Public Health Nurse at the Porcupine Health Unit.

The Porcupine Health Unit is an organization that works with communities in our area to promote and protect health.

Together we are committed to: understand our health and safety and their determinants; provide a variety of relevant, responsive and effective programs that will improve and protect our health.
