Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the doors to the South Porcupine Food Bank remain open. Precautions are being taken, though.

According to treasurer Peter Davis, the food bank hours remain the same.

To address the social distancing standards, they are only allowing four clients into the food bank at a time. People who are ill are being asked to stay away or wear a face mask.

“We have hand sanitizer station inside and are taking necessary precautions for our volunteers as well with hand sanitizer, washing station, disposable gloves, disinfecting wipes to clean all hard surfaces, as well as common sense to stay home if exhibiting any cold or flu-like symptoms,” said Davis.

At the Timmins Food Bank, chair Jim Young said the services haven't been altered. As of today, they plan to open as usual for clients on Wednesday.

The South Porcupine Food Bank is stocked on most items, but are getting short on:

  • Baby wipes

  • Ravioli

  • Alphagetti

  • Macaroni and Cheese (e.g., KD)

  • Ham flakes

  • Granola bars

  • Cereals

  • Canned Stew

Davis said the group also accepts cash donations to help keep up with buying perishable food items such as milk, margarine, break, fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats, as well as non-perishable food they are running low on. Tax receipts can be issued. You can donate online here
