7:10 a.m. original story:

'The City with a Heart of Gold' will play host to a Rogers Hometown Hockey broadcast in the upcoming 2016-2017 NHL season, says a source with knowledge of the 2016/17 schedule.

On Tuesday, Sportsnet announced that Newmarket, Ontario will be the season's first stop in October. Sportsnet is expected to make a formal announcement later on Wednesday morning outlining the entire season's schedule, including the date of the Timmins stop, says the source, who spoke to TimminsToday on condition of anonymity as the schedule has not been publicly released.

Hometown Hockey is one of Sportsnet's two weekly flagship national programs. Hosted by veteran sportscaster Ron MacLean and Tara Slone, the program features live segments from a different Canadian city or town each week, highlighting the local hockey culture.

A large fleet of branded trucks, including a mobile studio, will roll into town and put Timmins in the national spotlight on a Sunday night NHL broadcast.

Local efforts to bring the event to Timmins were made by Wayne Bozzer and the Timmins Sports Heritage Hall of Fame, who mentioned the application at a city council meeting in June.

Hometown Hockey made stops in other Northern cities before - Sudbury in 2014, North Bay and Sault Ste. Marie in 2015, and Thunder Bay in early 2016.

Updates to come later this morning.
