The Mattagami Region Conservation Authority is keeping a close eye on area creeks.

According to the organization’s watershed statistics update, the creeks, especially Town Creek, “have been hindered by a build-up of snow at some of the culverts.”

The section of Town Creek between Waterloo Road and Vimy Avenue is of particular concern for the MRCA, and snow is being removed from the areas when possible.

The snow depth and water content is still above normal for this time of year.

The MRCA says the water content throughout the Upper Mattagami Watershed is 114.7 to 205.9 per cent above normal.

According to the report, for the coming week there is minimal precipitation and no major weather system is expected.

Other highlights are:

  • Winter drawdown of Mesomikenda, Mattagami Lake and Peter Long are ongoing, and the drawdown of Wawaitin has started. “The dams are currently set up to continue drawdown until refilling begins in April. Higher than normal to normal inflows have persisted through the winter,” reads the report.
  • The flood forecast and warning manual has been updated and will be delivered to municipal and provincial partners soon.
  • Watershed conditions will be reviewed by the Upper Mattagami Water Management Committee at its first meeting Friday, March 22.
