District School Board Ontario North East is reviewing a list of over $18 million in capital improvements for 2017-2018.
“A number of these projects include work that is already underway,” says Board Chair Doug Shearer.
Common items to upgrade security will be addressed in all schools. New PA systems will be installed, lock out blinds will be added, and LED signs in front of all schools will be installed.
To save power costs, all lighting in schools will be converted to LED systems, and motion sensors will be installed. Wherever lead exceedence in water has been reported, pipes will be replaced. Smudge rooms with separate ventilation systems are being installed in all secondary schools. Each school will also have other projects underway, such as floor or ceiling repairs, generator or heating upgrades, or roof repair or replacement.
“Our Building Services team has worked very hard to determine what our capital needs are,” says director of education, Lesleigh Dye. “We’re really excited that every single school over the course of this year will have a project or more being done -- ranging from rooms that are well-ventilated for the purpose of smudging, to looking at all of our schools having digital signs in front to support and honour all of the wonderful things happening in our schools.”
“The plan presented to the board was an outstanding effort,” adds Shearer. “It’s a fluid plan which can be adjusted over time, but we’re very hopeful that we’ll be able to get almost, if not all of the work completed by August 2018.”
