The Timmins Police Youth in policing ambassadors tackled “distracted driving” head-on on Friday at the Urban Park in downtown Timmins.

Thanks to the deployment of the Timmins Police “Distracted Driving Simulator”, participants were shown the obvious and significant dangers linked to using handheld communication devices while driving.

The simulator helps illustrate the applicable dangers associated with such activity in an “as real as possible” setting.

Hopefully, the message, coming from peers and persons of a similar age group, will resonate with the intended “at-risk” population: person between 18-25 who are significantly over- represented in motor vehicle collision statistics.

The Timmins Police Service views such activities as an investment in public safety that is focused on enhancing roadway safety among younger drivers in particular but the general driving population as well.

Engaging local youth in such community based deployments is one of many ways the Timmins Police Service seeks to reach out and have a positive impact on driving behaviors in the Timmins area.
