Shirley Cheechoo to address local students

Traditionally, the Great Moon Gathering was a time to share stories and lessons. This week's event carries on in that spirit
The Moon - Apollo 8

The 25th annual Great Moon Gathering educational forum will take place Thursday and Friday at Northern College in Timmins to a full house.

Registration has been an overwhelming success and all spaces for the two-day even have been filled.

More than 30 workshops will be held on a wide range of educational topics.

The Great Moon Gathering provides educators with insights, resources, and opportunities regarding traditional education, values, and strategies which they can share with their students in the classroom.

In the tradition of the Omushkego people - Kishay Pism Mamawihitowin - the Great Moon Gathering, was the last of the winter moons and marked the beginning of the end of winter and the coming of spring. It was time for families to gather together and celebrate. The traditional gatherings were also a time for sharing stories and lessons.

The guest speaker will be Dr. Shirley Cheechoo who was recently appointed Chancellor of Brock University.

She is an acclaimed aboriginal filmmaker who has received more than 21 awards and recognition for her feature films, television movie, documentaries, and short films.

Cheechoo was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate of Letters, Laurentian University.

The GMG will also screen three films including Moose River Crossing written and directed by Dr. Cheechoo. Moose River Crossing is a contemporary drama about six survivors of residential school who meet on their way to a residential school reunion.

Treaty 9/Trick or Treaty was directed by Alanis Obomsawin. The film explores the deceptions used by Canadian negotiators preceding the signing of the 1905 Treaty Nine agreement and the ramifications that have persisted since.

After the Last River, directed by Victoria Lean, looks at the impact of the De Beers diamond operation located downstream from the remote community of Attawapiskat as it lurches from crisis to crisis and increasing environmental concerns
