Sears demolition creates new opportunities at Timmins Square

Two new stores now open at regional shopping centre, other tenants coming

The demolition of the old Sears building isn’t the only new project at Timmins Square. The regional shopping centre recently welcomed two new stores into its fold, plus two more tenants will open in the near future.

Demolition of Sears began earlier this week, but the plan is to have more than empty space in the mall’s parking lot.

“A portion of the area will create the opportunity to ensure Timmins Square continues to meet both the needs of our tenants as well as our community with planning underway to create a new Back Yard for Summer 2022,” said Brenda McLeish, property manager for Timmins Square, in a release issued on Friday, July 30. “This open-air space will enhance our Specialty Leasing program, create summer relaxation areas, provide increased outdoor patio seating for take-out guests, and incorporate space to host RioCan Cares community events.

“The remainder of the area will allow us future leasing opportunities to complement our existing retail mix, which recently included the store opening of both The Shoe Company and Ecko!”

The Shoe Company features Canada’s largest selection of branding footwear for the whole family. Brand names include Nike, Adidas, Skechers, Vans, Puma and Converse.

Ecko has been a global leader in youth culture and fashion. It features a variety of fashion for men and women plus accessories.

There are also more new tenants coming to Timmins Square.

“We are anxiously awaiting the build out of Planet Fitness in their 15,000-sq. ft. location between Mark’s Work Warehouse and Urban Planet, offering extremely low prices and a variety of health benefits,” McLeish said.

“To finalize our update, we are pleased to announce the upcoming arrival of Cannaverse, Canada’s premiere leader in delivering safe access to legal cannabis, into their 2,500-sq. ft store located across from Cali Nails.”

She said the regional shopping centre is trying to minimize disruption created by construction projects.

“Through the remainder of construction, we will work to minimize disruption to our tenants, customers and neighbours,” McLeish said. “We have currently added a watering program to minimize dust on the parking lot.”

Construction work at the former Sears site is slated to be complete by October.

The additions will help enhance the experience for all concerned at Timmins Square.

“We are thrilled to be moving into a better position heading out of this pandemic than when it began and look forward to assisting with Back to School and, in many cases, Back to the Office needs of customers,” she said.
